What exactly is lipstick?

Predominantly serving a cosmetic purpose, modern-day lipstick is designed to add colour, and to shade, define, and accentuate your lips, or to conceal lip pigmentation. Available in finishes such as matte, shine, velvet, sheer, and gloss, it is traditionally sold in a bullet-shaped solid stick which enables precise application and subsequently makes contouring easier, but is now also widely available in the form of lipstick palettes, and liquid lipsticks.

What is lipstick made from?

Typically manufactured using a beeswax, ozokerite, or candelilla wax base which gives lipstick its solid yet spreadable form, castor oil, mineral-based oils, lanolin, cocoa powder, jojoba, or petrolatum give it moisture, and non-toxic iron oxides, lake dyes, carmine, and even fruit-derived pigments give lipstick its colour. Meanwhile, silica is often used to add texture.
